What to do?

The Memel district is renowned for its spectacular scenery, with rolling upland grasslands, mountains, sandstone cliffs, river valleys and extensive wetlands. The largest of these wetlands in the Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve, borders on the northern outskirts of the town of Memel.

Seekoeivlei is one of a handful of South African wetlands that enjoy international RAMSAR status.
As such, South Africa has an international obligation and responsibility to conserve this wetland, including its diverse fauna and flora, as a fully-functional and sustainable resource.

Birdwatching in the region
The Memel area is becoming better known as a prime birding destination, as it plays host to a number of South African endemic bird species, as well as a number of Red Data Book species.Examples of theses "specials' include Rudd's & Botha's Lark, Yellow-breasted Pipit, Blue Korhaan, Ground Woodpecker, Buff-streaked Chat, Sentinel Rock Thrush and Bush Blackcap. Wattled, Grey Crowned and Blue Crane also occur and breed in the area.

Other outdoor recreational activities on offer in this area include hiking, horse riding, 4x4 routes, fishing and mountain biking. The often clear night skies also offer unbeatable star-gazing opportunities.

The district has a rich history, and of particular interest are a number of sites relating to activities during the 1899-1902 Anglo-Boer War, as well as various other earlier wars.
